Jim Corbe

Jim Corbe, born Edward James Corbe was born on 25th July 1875.
He was a Brish hunter, tracker, naturalist and an author who had
hunted many man eang gers and leopards in India. He had a rank
of colonel in the Brish Indian Army and was frequently called by the
Government of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh now the
Indian states of Uar Pradesh and Uarakhand, to kill man-eang
gers and leopards that were aacking and killing people in the
nearby villages of the Kumaon -Garhwal Regions. He has wrien
many books like Man Eaters of Kumaon Jungle Lore, and other books
telling us about his hunts and experiences, which enjoyed crical
acclaim and commercial success. He became a revered photographer
and spoke out for the need to protect India's wildlife from exncon.
Also, Corbe used to kill gers and leopards only if it was required as
those animals, like all big cats, were facing exncon.

During his life, Corbe tracked and shot a number of
leopards and Tigers; about a dozen were well known
man-eaters. Corbe provided esmates of human
casuales in his books, including Man-Eaters of Kumaon,
The Man-Eang Leopard of Rudraprayag, and The
Temple Tiger, and More Man-Eaters of Kumaon.
According to Corbe, the gers and leopards had killed
more than 1200 people. There is some difference in the
official human death tolls that the Brish and Indian
governments have on record and Corbe's esmates.

The first famous man-eang ger Corbe had killed was the Champawat ger. It was known to kill around
436 people . Though most of his kills were gers, Corbe had also successfully killed 2 man eang leopards.
The first was the Panar Leopard in 1910, which had killed 20 people . The second was the man-eang
Leopard of Rudraprayag in 1926, which terrorized the pilgrims journeying to the holy Hindu shrines
Kedarnath and Badrinath for more than eight years, and was said to have killed more than 126. Another
one of his famous ger kills was the Chowgarh man-eang gress.

Aer hunng down many man-eang gers and leopards for a long me, Jim Corbe rered and seled
         down in Nyeri, Kenya.
